Zodiac Affinity
Optical Calcite has a special affinity with the signs of Cancer and Sagitarius, but benefits all signs. It has a Receptive Energy, its Planet is the Moon and its Element is Water.
Folklore
Optical Calcite is used today in spirituality rituals as a focal point for contemplation during spiritual meditation.
Optical Calcite was once used by the Norse as a sun stone as well as a tool to help navigate ships at sea. It is still used today by some Pennsylvania Dutch healers who call it the "divinity stone."
Crystal System
Optical Calcite has a trigonal cystal system and is in the mineral class of carbonate. It is formed from solutions containing calcium through sedimentation. Its coloring is generally clear to slightly cloudy and occasionally has a tint of pale color as you can see in the photos.
The slower formation, and lack of other minerals in this particular type of Calcite make it appear to be frozen water. This is also what contributes to its double refractive property. If you draw a line on a piece of paper and place the crystal on top of it, from one view you will see a single line. Rotate the crystal a quarter turn, and you will see two lines showing the double refraction. Kids love to see this "trick" and think the stone is quite magickal as a result. |
