Folklore
Many modern beliefs have the Opal to be a stone of misfortune. This came from an unfortunate reference by Sir Walter Scott in his novel 'Anne of Gierstein' where misfortune surrounded the gem. While unfounded, the rumor mill as it were, spread this misinformation. But truth be known, nothing could be farther from its real benefits.
Opal contains the qualities of every other stone and as such, it can be programmed and charged with vitually every type of energy. Additionally, it may be used in spells involving almost every magickal need. Black Opals are prized by magicians and witches as power stones. They are used as part of ritual jewelry designed to increase the amount of power raised and released from the body during magick.
Crystal System
Opal has an amorphous crystal system and is in the mineral class of oxides. It is formed through a secondary process where silicic acid gel is solidified by loss of water. These drops of silicic acid in the gel form tiny silicon dioxide globules whose make up can contain up to 20% water. It is the bending of light by these globules that give off the beautiful iridescence ( or 'fire') most are familiar seeing in a lot of commercial jewelry.
When Opal has a basic color of blue (calcium and iron added) it is called boulder opal. When white (calcium and magnesium) it is called milk opal. Pink Opal does not exhibit 'fire' because it solidified before the globules could form. Dendritic Opal also contains no 'fire' and occurs in a variety of colors. This formation will exhibit branched markings running through its pearly looking makeup. Whatever its coloring though, it is a powerful gem. |

Opal is effective when it is carried, worn, or laid in the area of the Heart Chakra. Laid on the Brow or Crown , it is quite beneficial as an aid to astral projection and to use for meditative contemplation.

Opal has a good, overall health enhancing effect because it strengthens the will to live. It is also used to disperse infections, purify the blood and kidneys, to regulate insulin production, and to provide comfort during childbirth.
