Second or Sacral Chakra

2nd Chakra Symbol

2nd / Sacral / Sanskrit: Swadhisthana

There are seven energy spots that make up the major Chakras and each governs the physical, mental and spiritual aspects of our lives. In healing with crystals, assistance is given to the areas that may be blocked or excessive to balance the energy flow through our body and aid in our overall well being.

It has always intrigued me that there are seven major Chakras and seven families or shapes in the Crystal System. I don't believe this has occurred by "accident". Generally, while color is always a good starting point, many times it is the shape (see the Crystal Systems and You pages) of the crystal that will be of more benefit in bringing about balance in a Chakra.

I used to be puzzled with stone choices my hand was drawn to at different times since the "color" didn't match, but when I later looked up the crystal system the stone was in, it then made perfect sense. And, there will always be exceptions to every "rule". We are each unique and complicated, and it is sometimes just not possible to know anything more than "this is the combination that will help." The stones are wiser than me, my hands are just their tools to use.

Areas Governed
The 2nd Chakra is about pleasure and self-gratification. It is located between the pubic bone and the naval and is also rooted in the spine. This is where we access the lowest level of our emotional body and the area that holds one's unhealed inner child. Images of this, and past, life traumas are stored here, and the ability to release old emotions is also based at this Chakra. Much of our creative energy flows from this Chakra, so if you are an artist experiencing a "block" in your creative process, this would be the area to work on.

When in Balance...
We are provided with our emotional intelligence, the ability to experience pleasure, are able to nuture ourselves and others, can utilize our ability to change, and become able to put healthy boundaries into place. Creative thoughts and actions flow and move freely, and we are relaxed.

When Excessive...
Sexual addiction and acting out can occur, there may be excessively strong emotions, you may become ruled by your emotions, have poor boundaries and feel invaded by others, have emotional dependancy or obsessive attachments.

When Deficient...
We may be rigid in our body and attitudes, have a fear of sex, have poor social skills, deny ourselves of pleasure, and have fear of change when out of balance at this Chakra. We may also experience a loss of desire and passion and our creativity will come to a standstill.

Healing the Chakra...
As in the First Chakra, it is important to reconnect with our body when out of balance here. Any type of movement activity aids in this process as well as massage or yoga. Carrying or laying a beneficial stone on this Chakra will help with containing or releasing emotions, assist in healing the injured inner child, and establish healthy boundaries and pleasures.

Physical problems common to an imbalance in this area can include OB/GYN problems, pelvic or lower back pain, sexual potency, disorders of reproductive organs, menstrual difficulties, knee trouble, and loss of appetite for food, sex and life overall.

Note: When using gemstones for healing, the energy should be directed through the body flowing from Earth to Sky or Sky to Earth, depending on what is to be worked on. For this Chakra, Sky to Earth movement is valuable for drawing back our spirit and vitality. But, always keep in mind that there is no "right" or "wrong" way if the good that is brought helps you to realize your wholeness.
