Septarian Spheres
|
Crystal System... Decomposing sea life that had been killed by volcanic eruptions was attracted to the sediment around them and formed mud balls. As the ocean receded, the balls were exposed to air and sun which caused them to dry and crack. They also shrank at the same time trapping the cracks inside. As decomposed Calcite from the shells was carried down into the cracks in the mud balls, Calcite crystals formed. This thin wall of Calcite then transformed into Aragonite separating the heavy clay exteriors from the Calcite centers. |

Zodiac Affinity... Folklore... Some sources attribute the name Septarian to the Latin name, Septem, meaning seven, relating that the mud balls cracked with 7 points in every direction, thereby creating the beautiful design. Others to the Latin word "saeptum", which means a small wall or enclosure. I have to agree with the second translation. In counting edges in the crystals I have seen, the "7" points did not seem to be a consistent characteristic and the second translation seems to more accurately describe how they actually form. |
