Folklore
Sugilite doesn't have a long history since it was not discovered until 1944 in Japan and was named after its discoverer, Dr. Kenichi Sugi. It remained reletively unknown until the 1980's when it became the stone that is supposed to represent the Age of Aquarius. It is also known under the names of Luvulite and Royal Azel.
Since Sugilite is a fairly new stone, its uses in magick are new as well. There's a lot of research and experimenting that is going on with this one at the present time.
Crystal System
Sugilite has a hexagonal crystal system and is in the mineral class of ring silicate. It's color is violet and it is formed in a primary manner in pegmatites of alkaline magmas.
Sugilite is rare in the market place. There are only two sources of the deep violet variety, one in Japan and the other in South Africa. The mine in South Africa has probably the most spectacular coloring, but is a Magnesium mine and is about a half mile down from the surface. As you can imagine, it's an expensive proposition to bring it to the surface. A pinker variety has been discovered in the Central Province in India which lends itself to larger pieces that can be fashioned into jewelry items, although it's effects do not seem to be as strong as the violet colored variety. |

Sugilite will improve our ability to face up to unpleasant things. It can dissolve tension in the soul, alleviate sorrow and grief and can help with fears and paranoia.
Application
Sugilite should be worn on the body (like most gemstones). In cases of pain, it would be laid on the painful area or can be held in the hand. The spiritual effect of Sugilite increases through regular meditation with it.

Sugilite helps us to deal with and overcome conflicts without entering into compromise. It aids in finding solutions that can be based on agreement and not put any party at a disadvantage.
Physically...
Sugilite has a harmonizing effect on the nerves and brain and alleviates severe pain. While both colors seem to have many of the same properties, the deep violet seems to exhibit more strongly the harmonizing effects. Both varieties have been shown to help with epilepsy, dyslexia and motor disturbances.

Color - Purple: Crown Chakra. Opens, clears and balances the kundalini channels. Helps the spiritual being to live well on the earthplane and cushions the earth's harshness for spiritually oriented people. Aids in living in the present rather than dwelling in the past or future. Heals the body via the mind, promotes karmic healing and connection to the Goddess within. Balances the left and right sides of the brain, releases and heals dispair, releases hostility and eases discouragement.
