Kundalini is a Sanskrit word meaning coiled serpent. Also relevant is the Meso-American word Ku, which translates to “the spirit force of God waits within each person.” Both words refer to the ‘serpent power’ said to be coiled in a ball at the base of a person’s spine that once stimulated, uncoils and rises up the spine to the brain, transforming the individual.
There are a few stages to awakening this energy. Most importantly, you need to be spiritually ready to do so. The following tips are provided by the Swami Kriyananda.
Just like entering into doing shadow work before you are ready, leaping into this experience too soon can create uncomfortable mental, physical and emotional reactions. It is important that you have clear and balanced chakras before beginning your travels to higher spirituality.
As we progress on our peaceful journey to enlightenment we will experience many spiritual awakenings. A Kundalini awakening can be considered a type of spiritual awakening, but not all spiritual awakenings are Kundalini awakening.
It is not our goal to have the Kundalini awakening, but more a natural result of practicing to become a whole, self-actualized person. If you experience the awakening or rising, that’s awesome. If you practice towards that purpose and it doesn’t happen, you are still enriching yourself in cultivating your spirituality. It's a win-win adventure.
So, I will repeat myself. Even though Kundalini awakenings can sound like a mystical and amazing trip, they can also be overwhelming if not prepared. When we let go of a desired outcome and instead focus on the act of enriching our life with no goal in mind, the whole process is still very rewarding.
