What is Kundalini?

The Short Explanation-

Kundalini is a Sanskrit word meaning coiled serpent. Also relevant is the Meso-American word Ku, which translates to “the spirit force of God waits within each person.” Both words refer to the ‘serpent power’ said to be coiled in a ball at the base of a person’s spine that once stimulated, uncoils and rises up the spine to the brain, transforming the individual.

Awakening Kundalini -

There are a few stages to awakening this energy. Most importantly, you need to be spiritually ready to do so. The following tips are provided by the Swami Kriyananda.

  1. See everyone (and everything) as expressions of the Divine.
  2. Become willing to serve others.
  3. Keep a positive attitude. Be expansive and generous and avoid negativity of any kind.
  4. Live in the consciousness of Light. Affirm your higher nature.
  5. Live in greater awareness. Avoid the temptation to sink into sleepy, unconscious energy. Avoid anything that dulls the mind.
  6. Meditate. Highly recommended are the meditation techniques of the path of Kriya Yoga as taught by Paramhansa Yogananda.
  7. Do gentle breathing exercises, visualizations, yoga postures, Energization Exercises.
  8. Chant. Devotional chanting is very powerful for raising Kundalini.
  9. Say “Yes” to life. Embrace every situation and be energetic in everything you do.
  10. Keep good posture and your spine straight. Learn to live in the spine and stay centered there.
  11. Learn to draw Kundalini up from above, rather than force it up from below. Create a strong field of magnetism in the upper chakras, particularly the spiritual eye.
  12. Think of saintly people and let their magnetism help you. They will empower and pilot your efforts.

Just like entering into doing shadow work before you are ready, leaping into this experience too soon can create uncomfortable mental, physical and emotional reactions. It is important that you have clear and balanced chakras before beginning your travels to higher spirituality.

As we progress on our peaceful journey to enlightenment we will experience many spiritual awakenings. A Kundalini awakening can be considered a type of spiritual awakening, but not all spiritual awakenings are Kundalini awakening.

It is not our goal to have the Kundalini awakening, but more a natural result of practicing to become a whole, self-actualized person. If you experience the awakening or rising, that’s awesome. If you practice towards that purpose and it doesn’t happen, you are still enriching yourself in cultivating your spirituality. It's a win-win adventure.

So, I will repeat myself. Even though Kundalini awakenings can sound like a mystical and amazing trip, they can also be overwhelming if not prepared. When we let go of a desired outcome and instead focus on the act of enriching our life with no goal in mind, the whole process is still very rewarding.
